CARIBBEAN-CLIMATE-EU grants $5M Euros To Peru For The Organisation Of COP20

LIMA, Peru, Oct. 03, 2014, CNS – The European Union granted a contribution of 5 million euros (approximately 18 million Peruvian soles) to support the organisation of the 20th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP20), which will take place in Lima from December 1 to12.

The funds are destined to the Peruvian Ministry of Environment with the aim of reinforcing the negotiations process and facilitating the organisation and logistics of the Climate Conference. They will be implemented through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Environment having signed an agreement to this effect. 

The agreement subscribed by the European Union and UNDP, which establishes the terms of the European contribution to the organisation of the COP20, was officially delivered today to the Peruvian Minister of Environment, Manuel Pulgar- Vidal.

The authorities present during the ceremony, which took place in the Peruvian Ministry of Environment, included the Minister of Environment, Manuel Pulgar- Vidal, the Ambassador to the European Union in Peru, Irene Horejs, the Director for International and Climate Strategy of the Directorate-General for Climate Action of the European Commission, Artur Runge-Metzger and the Resident Representative Ad Interim of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Peru, María Luisa Silva.

In their speeches, the representatives of the European Union emphasised the excellent work of the Peruvian government in its role as Presidency of the negotiations with the aim of reaching a global agreement on climate change.

"We understand the enormous challenge that Peru is facing in hosting an international event of such scope, the biggest event to have ever been organised in the country.  We guarantee our support to the Peruvian government in this great task, given that we all share the responsibility for leaving to our sons a green planet with a decent standard of life,” said Ambassador Horejs.

The European Union has been developing different actions of support to the Peruvian government in its role as Presidency and Host country of the 20th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP20).  This agreement marks the biggest contribution given by international cooperation to Peru as Host country of COP20.
