The Caribbean Organisation of Tax Administrators (COTA) launched its Sixth Essay Competition for secondary school students on February 18.
The Competition topic is ‘Digitalization – Moving Today’s Tax Administration Beyond the Twenty-First Century’.
This year’s competition targets students between the ages of 14 and 16 from all Members of COTA.
Participating tax administrations include The Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and Turks and Caicos Islands.
The competition is aimed at stimulating broad interest in taxation matters and ideas to digitally transform the taxpayer experience. It seeks to encourage youth to become knowledgeable about the tax administration function as potential taxpayers and decision-makers in the private and public spheres, as well as engender an interest in this field as a career choice.
Prizes will be awarded to the three students who have submitted the best essays at the regional level, as well as to the schools which the winners attend.
This year, the prizes are: First Prize – US$1,000 and a Trophy, Second Prize – US$700 and Third Prize – US$500.
The closing date for the submission of entries to the national Tax Administration Agencies is April 18. The winners will be announced at the COTA Twenty-Fifth General Assembly and Technical Conference scheduled to be held in Turks and Caicos Islands in July 2019.
The aim of COTA is to foster collaboration and experience-sharing among tax administrations in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) towards efficient and enhanced revenue generation for national development. Tax administrations in all CARICOM Member States and Associate Members are members of COTA.
