Customs officer and Venezuelans arrested in drug bust

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands, Jun 06 2017 – The police have launched a probe into a suspected drug smuggling ring following the arrest of five people, including a customs officer, three Venezuelan nationals and a woman last Friday.

The probe follows a drug raid in which cash and cocaine were seized at an apartment.

The police report that during a joint raid with customs officers, the five, who are believed to be involved in drug ring, were taken into custody.

According to Collector of Customs Charles Clifford, the customs officer who was arrested has been suspended from duty and remains in custody.

In addition to the customs officer, a 39-year-old woman, who was arrested for the same offence has been bailed, however, the three Venezuelans remain in police custody.

They were arrested on suspicion of importation of cocaine, possession of cocaine and possession with intent to supply.
