KINGSTON, Jamaica, Jul 19 2016 – Jamaica police say they will lay manslaughter charges against the driver of a vehicle that plunged into the Bog Walk Gorge in the central parish of St. Catherine over the weekend, killing six people.

“A statement has been collected from him, where he admitted to being the driver of the vehicle and so, he will be charged for six counts of manslaughter. In fact, our deeper investigation revealed he is not the holder of a driver’s licence and so that will be another charge that will be proffered against him,” said Senior Superintendent Calvin Allen, head of the Highway and Traffic Division.

The driver, El Fargo Slew, who police had initially thought was among those killed, turned himself over to the police on the weekend.

The police had earlier reported Saturday that shortly after midnight (local time), the driver of the vehicle, attempted to beat the traffic light, located on the Flat Bridge in the gorge.

According to eyewitness reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle which then overturned into the Rio Cobre.

The police say all seven were trapped in the vehicle, however one of the occupants managed to climb onto the roof of the vehicle and was rescued.
