BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Jul 06 2017 – Air traffic control services at the Grantley Adams International Airport had to be suspended for approximately one hour today, forcing the delay of an international flight by 30 minutes and the diversion of two regional flights. This was due to the malfunctioning of a backup battery in the radar section of the control tower.
However, in a statement issued via the Barbados Government Information Service this evening, the Ministry of International Transport assured that air traffic operations had been back to normal since approximately 8 a.m. on Thursday.
In response to reports making the rounds on social media, the ministry explained that “the Barbados Fire Service was contacted and a decision was made to close the air traffic services building while the cause of the odour emanating from the faulty battery was investigated.
“At no point in time were communications lost as a result of a systems failure, nor was the Grantley Adams International Airport closed,” the statement added.
