ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Mar 30 2016 – A former Antigua and Barbuda prime minister has described the new United States Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Linda Taglialatela as an “old lady”.

Sir Lester Bird, while speaking in the Antigua and Barbuda Parliament on Tuesday, questioned what Ambassador Taglialatela can do for Barbados and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

“The Americans just insert themselves. I know you (are) going to get vex with me, but they send some old lady down here saying she is the ambassador to Antigua. Come on, I don’t care what it is, let me tell you all something, the point is they (have) to send some people here who are going to do something for these islands. I suspect she was in something back there and they give her an ambassadorship,” Sir Lester said.

“What are her credentials to make her come here and want to advance the third border. Mr. Speaker, I am trying to suggest Mr. PM that you get with the other prime ministers in the OECS and CARICOM.

“The problem is, I bet she raised a lot of money for Obama’s campaign and she is raising money now for the present democratic person, Hillary Clinton. That is how they choose their ambassadors sometimes,” Sir Lester added.

Taglialatela has spent over three decades working overseas and in Washington.
