Four Haitians killed in DR prison

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, Aug 21 2017 – At least four Haitian nationals were killed during an incident at an overcrowded prison in the Dominica Republic last week, Haitian officials have confirmed.

They said that Bruner Ferdinan, Dieumanece Jean, Luis Pie, and Yefri Seis, who were in jail on charges ranging from theft to rape were killed in the overcrowded penitentiary of Victoria, known as the most dangerous prison in Santo Domingo and housing more than 8,000 inmates.

A statement from the Office of the Prosecutor General notes that about 10 detainees had assaulted and killed the four Haitians in the prison during a clash.

The statement said that based on preliminary information, it appears that the attackers were trying to get Ferdinan to disclose where he had concealed several hundred thousand pesos that he is alleged to have stolen from two Chinese citizens in Santo Domingo.

Police said they had recovered an estimated 700,000 pesos out of the 1.3 million pesos stolen.

The statement noted that during the incident, several attackers were also injured slightly and that the alleged perpetrators of the incident have all been identified.

Haiti said it will urge the authorities in the Dominican Republic to impose the full brunt of the law on those held.
