GRENADA – Police officer dies during military-style training

An investigation has been launched following the death of a member of the Royal Grenada Police Force during a military-style training exercise on Wednesday.

According to Head of the Community Relations Department with the police force, Inspector Trevor Rodney, a batch of officers was engaged in the exercise when an accident occurred and one of the officers lost his life.

“An investigation will be conducted for the actual cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the death of the constable,” said Rodney, who did not provide details.

“What I can say is that the training involved the use of water,”  he said on Thursday.

Dead is officer Ashton Calliste, who was attached to the Rapid Response Unit.

The training was taking place in Paradise River which is located in the eastern parish of St Andrew.

An autopsy is to be conducted to determine the actual cause of death.

In recent years, a particular section of the river has claimed the lives of three people.

The last person to die there was Norris Crane in 2013 when he was found in the river lying face down.

Rodney said that the force is in a state of mourning for the officer who was previously attached to the St Andrew’s Police Station.
