Guyana president invites opposition leader to meeting concerning GECOM chairman

President David Granger has dispatched a letter to the office of the Opposition Leader, Bharat Jagdeo inviting him for discussions on the nominees for Chairman of the General Elections Commission (GECOM)

In the letter, addressed to Opposition Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira, Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon said the Head of State proposed that the meeting be held on Thursday  at 3 p.m. (local time) at the Ministry of the Presidency.

Harmon acknowledged receipt of a letter from Teixeira dated June 25.

In that letter, the topic of discussion was the appointment of a new Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Chairman.

In this latest correspondence dated July 3, the Director-General noted that the possibility of the meeting was based on the “availability of the Leader of the Opposition”.

Last month, Jagdeo said he was prepared to meet with Granger and indicated that the main opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) wanted the fresh regional and general elections as early as possible.

This stems from a ruling made by the Trinidad and Tobago based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) – that validated a motion of no confidence against the government that was passed in the National Assembly last December .

The Court also found the appointment of retired Justice James Patterson as GECOM chairman to be flawed.

The CCJ,  is Guyana’s highest and final court.
