GUYANA – US$1.1 million in relief funds to Antigua and Barbuda from India

The Government of India has contributed US$100,000 as a part of assistance for relief and rebuilding in the aftermath of the disaster caused to Antigua and Barbuda as a consequence of hurricanes in September 2017.

The High Commission of India located in Georgetown, which is also concurrently
accredited to Antigua and Barbuda, made the announcement today.

In addition, the Government of India in support of various reconstruction projects in Antigua and Barbuda following the natural disaster, has committed US$ 1 million through the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, UNDP, which manages the India – UN Development Partnership Fund, to initiate the conversation with the relevant authorities of Antigua and Barbuda for an appropriate project identified by it.

The High Commission said the funds have already been released so that the project could start as soon as the Government of Antigua and Barbuda identifies it, following consultation with the concerned UN authorities.

It said this fulfills the commitment made by the Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj during the India-CARICOM Ministerial Meeting held on September 19, 2017 as a token of solidarity with the friendly country – Antigua and Barbuda.
