Hundreds participated in the second Regional Energy Kilo-Walk which was held on Saturday, under the slogan ‘RE-Thinking Energy: Walk the Talk’.
The walk, which was coordinated by the CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and the Guyana Energy Agency, moved off from the Community’s Headquarters in Georgetown, Guyana, wended its way along the Rupert Craig Highway and back to the Headquarters.
The activity was aimed at highlighting the role that citizens can play in securing their own sustainable energy future, and creating a platform for engagement and increased public awareness of sustainable energy and development issues.
“The purpose of this walk … is to increase awareness around sustainable energy matters, this month being CARICOM Energy Month, where what we really promote is … efficient production, delivery and use of energy. As citizens, we are becoming increasingly empowered because of technological changes as well as increasing awareness in how we can produce and use our own energy”, Dr. Devon Gardner, Programme Manager, Energy at the CARICOM Secretariat said.
Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Energy Agency, Dr. Mahender Sharma, highlighted the importance of the transition to sustainable energy and encouraged the full participation of citizens in this endeavour.
The activity featured entertainment by the President’s College Steel Orchestra and dissemination of material on the importance of the efficient use of energy and steps the Region is taking towards sustainable energy.
The well-attended event was one of a series of planned activities in observance of CARICOM Energy Month in November. Participants included youth groups, NGOs, staff members of government agencies, the CARICOM Secretariat and partner organisations, members of the diplomatic Corp and the general public.
