BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, May 27 2017 – A Bridgetown Magistrate Friday ordered the deportation of a Guyanese woman after she pleaded guilty to stealing from her place of employment.
She is Varshanie Doodnauth, who was living at 1st Avenue, Gills Gap, Eagle Hall, St Michael.
The 27-year-old confessed before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant in the District ‘A’ Criminal Court to stealing $2,878.24 belonging to Savings Plus Supermarket Inc., sometime between April 22 and May 21.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons, in outlining the facts to the magistrate, revealed that Doodnauth was a cashier at the supermarket when her supervisor discovered discrepancies in her submitted refunds.
She was questioned about the observations and admitted to using the supervisor’s swipe card on several occasions to conduct refunds for items, without the supervisor’s knowledge, and then kept the money.
The matter was reported to police and Doodnauth was taken into custody. However, the money was not recovered.
“I am sorry and I am willing to pay,” the Guyanese woman said, even as she admitted that she was not currently working and her husband would reimburse the establishment.
However, when her spouse took to the stand, he told the magistrate he only found out about the situation when police came to their house.
Doodnauth’s situation was further compounded when an immigration officer informed Magistrate Cuffy-Sargeant that she arrived in the country on February 16, 2015 from Georgetown and was granted a six-month stay.
She never left the island after her stay had expired; neither did she regularize her status.
Doodnauth was then handed over to immigration authorities and reprimanded and discharged for her crime. (Barbados TODAY)
