Haiti’s president mourns death of the chief of drug squad

President Jovenel Moise on Wednesday led the tribute to Inspector Charles Odelet, the head of the Brigade for the Fight Against Drug Trafficking (BLTS), who died suddenly over the last weekend.

Moise said that the death is a “huge loss for the Haitian National Police and the nation” and extended his condolences to Odelet’s family and the police.

Prime Minister Jean Henry Céant said he was saddened at the death, adding that given his professionalism “in the fight against the scourge of drugs, we measure the weight of this loss for Haiti in general.”

He urged the nation to be grateful for the role played by the former BLTS chief.

The spokesperson of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), Michel-Ange Louis Jeune, said that “this unexpected death leaves a big void within the police institution.”

The cause of death has not yet been determined.
