Hurricane Danny Weakens

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Aug 22 2015 – Hurricane Danny , the Category Three storm is weakening as it makes its way through the Lesser Antilles on Saturday and could become a tropical storm by Sunday, the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre has said.

It said that the first named hurricane of the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season was now packing winds of 100 miles per hour (mph) and was located 740 miles east of the Leeward Islands.

“Interests in the Leeward Islands and the Virgin Islands should monitor the progress of Danny.  Tropical storm watches will likely be required for portions of the Leeward Islands and the Virgin Islands later today,” the NHC said.

The center of Hurricane Danny was located near latitude 15.2 North, longitude 50.8 West and Danny is moving towards the west-northwest near 10 mph.  A turn to the west with an increase in forward speed is expected later Saturday, the NHC added.

It said that maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 100 mph with higher gusts and that additional weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

“Danny is expected to become a tropical storm on Sunday as it approaches the Leeward Islands,” the NHC said.
