Hurricane Joaquin Batters The Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas, Oct 02 2015 – Hurricane Joaquin began moving through the Central Bahamas Thursday night.

Joaquin’s slow motion means that extremely dangerous conditions will continue over portions of the warning areas in the Bahamas well into Friday.

Even if Joaquin moves out to sea, strong onshore winds associated with a frontal system will create minor to moderate coastal flooding along the coasts of the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states through the weekend.

Joaquin was expected to produce total rain accumulations of 12 to 18 inches over the central Bahamas with isolated maximum amounts of 25 inches. Rainfall amounts of five to 10 inches are expected over the southeastern Bahamas, with two to four inches over the northwestern Bahamas, eastern Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
