Jamaican Schools Affected By Smoke To Remain Closed

KINGSTON, Jamaica, March 15 2015 – The Ministry of Education is advising that schools that were closed on Friday, as a result of the smog emanating from the Riverton City landfill, will remain closed on Monday.

“The closure is to facilitate the clean-up of some schools and to determine their readiness for resumption particularly those that are located within the immediate vicinity.

“We also want to avoid the to-ing and fro-ing of children from home to school and back home, especially, while parents are at work,” a news release from the Education Ministry said Sunday afternoon following a press briefing called to update the nation on the ongoing fire at the Riverton landfill.

Depending on the wind direction as advised by the Met Office, schools may close once they are affected, the release added.

The ministry is also encouraging parents to ensure the proper supervision of their children while they are away from school.
