JLP Says Number of Children Being Murdered now at Crisis Level

KINGSTON, Jamaica, April 26 2015 – The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is warning that the number of children being murdered is now at crisis levels and is demanding swift action from the government.

The warning by Opposition Spokesperson on Education and Youth Senator Kamina Johnson-Smith comes a day after the decomposing body of 12-year-old Jamelia Johnson was discovered in bushes in Riversdale St Catherine.

Police investigators say the body had multiple stab wounds.

In a statement today, Johnson-Smith said the time for issuing press releases expressing condolences are over and that strong and consistent action is needed.

Noting that there are laws to deal with the protection of children, the Opposition Senator says the police must be ordered to be more aggressive in dealing with suspected cases of child abuse, both physical and sexual.

She says communities must be strengthened as it is clear that they are not playing the role of protectors and are not cooperating with the police.
