Legislators Briefed On Guyana’s Oil Sector

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Feb 01 2017 – Officials from the US-based oil giant, ExxonMobil, Wednesday began talks with government and opposition legislators on the development of the Liza Oil project

Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman described the talks here as technical in nature and while the first presentation was closed to the media, noted it is “the beginning of a series of engagement starting with policy makers and extending to citizens of Guyana throughout all ten regions.

“It is important, as Guyanese and particularly as policy makers, that we know what the resources are, how it is going to be exploited and captured and developed and very importantly how are we going to use the resource for the benefit of all Guyanese,” he told reporters.

Guyana is expected to begin commercial oil production by 2020 after ExxonMobil made significant oil discoveries in Guyana’s waters that could result in the country having access to a significant amount of oil.

Government said that similar updates will be held in the United states and the Caribbean where there are significant presence of Guyanese nationals.
