Mayor detained following death of student

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, Aug 04 2017 – The Mayor of Port-de-Paix, Josué Alusma, has been detained by authorities as they investigate the circumstances that led to the death of a student who was on a bus on Thursday.

Media reports said that the unidentified student was killed after bullets were fired at a bus on which he was a passenger during the early hours of Thursday. He died while being transported to hospital.

The Government Commissioner, Claude Frantz Antoine, confirmed that Alusma as well as a security officer had been detained for question as a result of the incident.

In a statement, Hermann Lubin, the owner of the bus said “we were on the road and the vehicle behind us, that of the Mayor of Port-de-Paix, Josué Alusma fired in our direction because we could not let him overtake us, because of the narrow road…”.

But Mayor Alusma has rejected the accusations, saying that his vehicle was being chased by unidentified individuals who wanted to kill him.

He said the gunshots came from the individuals in that vehicle and urged the authorities to begin an investigation as soon as possible, while criticising them for allowing the bus to resume its operations in Ti Boukan, on the outskirts of the capital.
