MIAMI – Tropical Storm Ophelia forms, poses no threat to Caribbean at present

At 5 a.m. the center of Tropical Storm Ophelia was located near latitude 31.9 North, longitude 38.8 West.

Ophelia is moving toward the southeast near 3 mph (6 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue during the next day or two.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts.

Gradual strengthening is forecast, and Ophelia is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1002 mb (29.59 inches).

There are no hazards affecting land at this time.
