New GECOM Chairman named in Guyana

The decision followed a meeting between President David Granger and the Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo as they hammered out names that were found not to be unacceptable to the President.

In a statement, the President’s office said the Leader of the Opposition agreed to submit such a list and the President received and reviewed the list of nominees this afternoon in an effort to bring the selection process to a speedy and favourable conclusion.

The President, according to the release, swiftly made the selection of Justice Claudette Singh from the list of nominees put forward by Jagdeo following their meeting.

President Granger approved Justice Claudette Singh for the top GECOM job indicating that she satisfies the criteria for the appointment and also satisfies the ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) for a consensual appointment supported by both the President and the Leader of the Opposition.
