CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Jun 21 2016 – Newly elected Prime Minister Allen Chastanet held talks with the Director General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Dr. Didacus Jules on issues affecting the sub-region in a changing global environment.
A brief statement issued following the talks on Monday, said that the two ”exchanged views on strengthening and consolidating cooperation in the face of regional and global economic challenges, with the Prime Minister being briefed on key OECS activities and events”.
The OECS groups the islands of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts-Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands.
Chastanet led his United Workers Party (UWP) to victory in the June 6 general elections here and Jules used the opportunity to extend congratulations to the 54-year old government leader.
“The OECS Commission stands ready to support the government across a number of socio -economic areas such as youth unemployment,” Jules said, adding “we are already seeing sound headway with the launch of the new OECS Youth Empowerment Strategy in engaging previously marginalized youth into valuable internships and work experience.
“I believe we are living in the most exciting time in history with innovation and technology being able to leverage previously unseen social, cultural and economic opportunities and we look forward to working with the Government to realise these opportunities for all OECS citizens,” he added.
