NEW YORK – Remains of Jamaicans who perished in Bronx fire to be flown home

The remains of the four Jamaicans who perished in a massive fire at a Bronx apartment in New York are to be flown to Jamaica for burial.

The family of the deceased, who are all relatives, have started a GoFundMe page to raise money to assist with the cost of flying the bodies to Jamaica.

It’s understood that the Jamaican government has also pledged to assist with funeral expenses.

Thirty-seven-year-old Katherine Stewart-Francis, seven-year-old Charmela Francis and two-year-old Kylie Francis, and 19-year-old Shantay Young died when a three-year-old child, playing with a gas stove in a ground floor apartment, set off a fire that quickly engulfed the five-storey building where they lived.

Eight other persons also died in the blaze.

Stewart-Francis’ husband and father of Kylie and Charmela remain in hospital in critical condition.
