Police in Trinidad capture soldier wanted in killing of mother and daughter

Police have captured a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) who is the main suspect in the shooting deaths of a 66-year-old woman and her 43-year-old daughter at their home on Tuesday.

Police said that the Regiment Warrant Officer was detained along Demerara Road and Arima Blanchisseusse Road on Tuesday night.

Police said that the soldier shot Carmilita De Leon and her daughter Calida Schumber at their home in Glencoe and that he had recently been served with a court order to stay away from the house.

“At around 8:15 p.m. on the second of January 2024, he was sighted by an active search party along the Blanchisseusse Road. He was arrested and detained without incident,” head of the Police Western Division, Superintendent Sean Henry said, adding that the suspect was taken to the Arima health facility for a medical checkup.

“He appeared to be free of any physical injury but was taken to the Arima health facility where he was medically examined and it was confirmed that he was without any physical injury. He was then handed over to the homicide bureau …and inquiries are continuing. The family of the deceased has been informed.”
