Police Service Commission Wins First Round in Battle with Suspended Top Cop

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Jun 29 2015 – The High Court has dismissed application by suspended commissioner of police Vere Browne for Judicial Review challenging the Commission’s decision to suspend him from his duties as Commissioner of Police.

Justice Brian Cottle, having listened to legal arguments and submissions, made to him by Mr. Lawrence Daniel Counsel for the applicant and Sir Gerald Watt and Dr. David Dorsett, Counsels for the Police Service Commission, ruled that the Police Service Commission was acting within its lawful jurisdiction and authority to take the action it did, once it is of the view that the alleged conduct complained of, were in breach of the police regulations and warranted appropriate disciplinary action.

There was no order as to cost made against the Police Commissioner, but leave was granted to him, to file an appeal against the decision, if he desired to do so.

Commissioner Vere Browne was suspended from indefinitely in a letter dated 15th January 2015.

The letter listed four complaints made against him for failing to perform certain duties.
