Prison officer in Guyana faces charges for alleged contraband smuggling

A prison officer is accused of attempting to smuggle contraband into the New Amsterdam Prison in Berbice, Guyana.

Angelica Cameron, a 32-year-old prison officer, was taken into custody on December 9th, following the alleged discovery of 289 grams of cannabis in her possession.

Reports are that Cameron colleagues stumbled upon the illicit contraband in her possession.

A police report followed, leading to her arrest and a subsequent appearance in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Peter Hugh.

During her court appearance on Wednesday, Angelica Cameron faced two charges of Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking.

She pled not guilty.

However, Magistrate Hugh rejected her bail application. Consequently, she was remanded to prison.

The matter was adjourned to December 27.
