Protester outside St Kitts-Nevis PM’s office demands her roof be fixed

A lone female protested Monday outside the offices of St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris demanding that her house roof be repaired with monies obtained from the selling of St. Kitts and Nevis passports under the Hurricane Relief Fund.

“My house needs fixing too,” reads the placard carried by Central Basseterre resident, Cherilyn Adolphine.

Adolphine, voicing her frustration, told reporters she filled out an application form in April this year and has been given the run-around by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and other government officials.

Adolphine is not the only one complaining. Scores of others say they are in need while others who are well off are benefitting as a result of political patronage.

The Roofing programme which is administered and managed by the Office of Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris has been mired in allegations of rampant corruption.

There have been widespread reports of the roofs on the homes of pastors, senior civil servants, ministers, their friends and families being repaired although no damage was done during the passage of the hurricanes last year.

There are also mounting reports that tonnes of building materials have been stored in homes and on the premises of several individuals around the island.

“No one is controlling what is going on at these hardware (stores). How on earth could you have contractors going to the hardware, picking up materials?” said an inside source who gave details posted on his Facebook page.

There are reports of persons close to officials who have had additions made to homes and abandoned or empty homes being repaired under the Hurricane Relief Fund.

The opposition has asked Prime Minister Harris to tell the country how much money was collected from the sale of St. Kitts and Nevis passports under the Hurricane Relief Programme of the Citizenship by Investment Programme.
