Reinhard Bonnke, preacher who drew millions, dies at 79

The Rev. Reinhard Bonnke, a Pentecostal preacher whose massive revivals drew millions across Africa, has died at the age of 79.

Bonnke’s ministry, Orlando, Florida-based Christ for All Nations says the pastor died December 7. It didn’t cite the cause or location of his death.

Bonnke became a household name across much of Africa with huge open-air rallies in which the minister practiced faith healing and claimed to bring 79 million people to Christianity.

His single largest gathering was said to attract some 1.6 million people in Lagos, Nigeria.

On two occasions in the 1990s the crowds grew so huge and unwieldy that at least 17 people were killed in stampedes. (The Associated Press)
