Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, has officially welcomed Cuba’s new ambassador to the island – Alejandro Simancas Marin.

The new ambassador succeeds Jorge Francisco Soberon Luis.

“I look forward to Ambassador Marin to continuing the fantastic work commenced by his predecessor,” Chastanet wrote on his official Facebook page.

He noted that St. Lucia recently signed co-operative agreements with Cuba in the areas of Agriculture and Education.

St. Lucia officially established  diplomatic relations with Cuba on August 23rd, 1979.

According to the Prime Minister, in 1999, the St Lucia-Cuba Joint Commission was established, with the aim of promoting co-operative relations between both countries in the  economic, social, cultural and technological fields.

The Commission also strives to assist in facilitating a greater understanding of each other’s views and positions on issues of mutual interest in the various regional and international fora.

The previous Cuban Ambassador, Jorge Francisco Soberon Luis, was awarded the St. Lucia Medal of Honour (Gold) of the Order of Saint Lucia before departing.

Last month, Governor General, Sir Emmanuel Neville Cenac, bestowed the honour on the Cuban diplomat on the advice of Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, for the ambassador’s ‘significant contribution’ to the country’s development.
