Second Escaped Prisoner Shot and Killed

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Jul 26 2015 – Hassan Atwell, one of three men who staged a brazen daylight prison break on Friday, was found dead on the outskirts of the capital with multiple bullet wounds, police have confirmed.

They said residents of East Dry River reported hearing several gunshots late Saturday night and when members of the Port of Spain Task Force and Inter Agency Task Force arrived on the scene they stumbled upon a body that had been riddled with bullets on the Servol Sunshine Hill Center.

The body was later identified as Atwell, 41, whom police had said on Friday had a string of outstanding offences against him including kidnapping, possession of firearm, robbery and sexual assault.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page last week, Atwell stated that “a true believer would accept death any day over oppression.

“And a true believer must do everything in his or her power to remove themselves from under oppression without fearing death. For it is more pleasing to ALLAH for a believer to stand up and fight against oppression and die in the process than for a believer to sit down and just accept oppression because he or she is afraid of death.”

On Friday, police shot and killed Allan “Scanny” Martin, 42, “following an exchange of gunfire in the vicinity of the Port of Spain General Hospital while seeking to elude capture”.

The other escapee, Christopher “Monster” Selby, 30, remains at large.
