Shooting at Hospital Leaves One Injured, Several Traumatised

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts and Nevis, Sept. 23, 2014, WINN –  Two gunmen chased a Basseterre teen through the Accident and Emergency area at the JNF Hospital on Monday night, firing several shots at him and wounding him about his body.

Police have confirmed that the gunmen, one masked, entered the waiting room of the general Accident and Emergency at about 7:45 p.m., and shot at 19-year old Kaheel Herbert of Lower Thibou Avenue.

Herbert ran reportedly into the treatment area and was pursued by the gunmen, who continued to fire at him as he ran.  The assailants fled on foot, reportedly making their escape through the ambulance bay.

Herbert was undergoing surgery overnight.  His condition was unknown, though Police Commissioner CG Walwyn confirmed that he was alive.

No one else was physically injured during the incident, but Assistant Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley said that several people, including staff were traumatised and were treated for shock.

Top health officials, have for years expressed concern about safety and security at the JNF, and some security measures have been put in place.
