Six Bodies Recovered from Collapsed Mine in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, May 19 2015 – Police have confirmed the discovery of six bodies after a mine caved-in on Sunday following heavy rains at Mowasi in Region Eight.

The authorities said they were searching for four others missing and feared dead. Seven other miners were rescued on Sunday and taken to the Mahdia Hospital.

The bodies of those recovered have not yet been identified and according to local media reports, police are asking relatives to visit the mortuary in Georgetown in a bid to identify the bodies.

Residents in Mahdia say that region has been experiencing heavy rainfall for several days now, making mining areas more vulnerable to erosion and pit cave-in due to soil instability.
