St Kitts Prime Minister Begins Legal Action Against Opposition Leader

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Sept 03 2016 – Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris Saturday said he had started legal proceedings against his predecessor Dr. Denzil Douglas and a radio station here over the publication of what he termed to be a “false, malicious and libellous statement”.

In a brief statement, Harris said that the offending statement was made on Friday on Freedom FM 106.5 radio station and was also repeated on the Facebook Page of the radio station.

Douglas had in the statement alleged that threats had been made on his life and that the person in question was using a pseudonym to post the message on the social website Facebook and that he was making the transcript available to the police for investigations.

Douglas said that he wanted the regional and international communities to be fully aware that if he is assassinated “in pursuance of my duties as leader of her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition” they would know who should be held accountable.

In his statement, Prime Minister Harris said that as soon as the offending publications were brought to his attention he immediately engaged his lawyers “in the matter, and after Queen’s Counsel communicated with Freedom FM 106.5 last evening, the offending Posts were removed from its Facebook page.

“The Hon. Prime Minister’s Counsel has commenced Legal action against both Freedom FM 106.5 and Dr. Douglas for the publications of these false, malicious and libellous allegations. Justice will now take its course,” the statement added.
