BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Mar 24 2016 – The Grantley Adams International Airport has been closed as a result of protest action by Air Traffic Controllers.

Regional Airline LIAT has advised that all flights to/ from Barbados for today, Thursday March 24 have been delayed due to the closure.

“LIAT also regrets to advise that passengers who decide to travel but are unable to complete their journey will not be provided with meals, transportation, hotel accommodation as the situation is beyond LIAT’s control. Passengers with onward connections are advised to contact the respective carriers,” airline Spokesman Desmond Brown said in a statement.

The protest has been taken in solidarity with striking Barbados Water Authority (BWA) employees, who have been off the job for nearly a week now.

Just yesterday Barbados Workers Union (BWU) General Secretary Toni Moore warned of stepped up protests in the BWU’s quest to get the BWA to honour payment of outstanding increments of $33 million, due over the past 10 years.

However, the BWA has been contending that the matter is “very complex”, while warning that a workers’ strike is not in the national interest at this time.

In recent months, the BWA has been grappling with water outages in several parishes and other woes.
