Trinidad Talks Loss of Biodiversity

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, May 20 2015 – The Green Market in Santa Cruz is hosting a critically important conversation on May 24 at 9:00 am about the loss of biodiversity in Trinidad and its consequences for human health and economic wellbeing.

The Green Market will be joined by Yasmin Comeau-Baksh, Curator of the National Herbarium, The Field Naturalist Society’s Amy Deacon and Shane Manchouck and Akilah Jaramogi, Director of the Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project. This panel will explain biodiversity and why maintaining the variety of lifeforms is critical to sustainable development.

“We need to alter our economic decision-making related to destructive patterns of production and consumption and begin to quantify and measure the services provided by natural ecosystems into national accounting systems so we can preserve and conserve biodiversity — our natural capital,” said Vicki Assevero, founder of the Green Market.

At 9:30 am, “The Web of Life”, an hour-long workshop for children ages 3-12 will introduce children to the ideas of interconnectedness, conservation and ecosystem services. This workshop will be conducted by Rheanna Chen, the Green Market’s Community Supported Agriculture Manager.

Because bio-diversity is a complex concept, The Green Market has invited several talented visual artists to display their representations of biodiversity. Theo Ferguson, of Yerette’s, David Inglefield’s amazing wooden bird sculpture, as well as Justine Garcia, Jonathan Solis, Olivia Fern and Ashley Thompson will have their work on display.
