Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, has announced that Antigua and Barbuda will be home to the newest campus of the UWI.
Professor Beckles made the announcement during the installation ceremony for Trinidad and Tobago national, Robert Bermudez as the 6th Chancellor of the UWI.
The ceremony, held at the St Augustine campus, was attended by President Anthony Carmona, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice Sir Dennis Byron, among other dignitaries.
“Just a few days ago, I had the opportunity to meet with the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda and discussed the fact that Antigua is now ready to establish the fourth landed campus of UWI,” Sir Hilary said.
“So, the Prime Minister [Gaston Browne] has given me the assurance that yes I can say that Mona was our first campus, St Augustine was our second campus, Cave Hill was our third campus, the Open Campus was our fourth campus and the Five Islands Campus of Antigua and Barbuda will be our fifth campus.”
There have been objections from many quarters to the decision by the Antigua and Barbuda Government to convert the Five Islands compound, built to house a secondary school, into a university campus.
However, the government is adamant that it will proceed with its stated intention.
