WASHINGTON, Nov 25 2016 — The US Government is resuming deportation flights to Haiti following a brief suspension after Hurricane Matthew.
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson says in a statement Wednesday that more than 200 Haitian nationals have been deported in recent weeks.
Johnson says that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement “plans to significantly expand removal operations in the coming weeks.”
Johnson announced the plan to detain and deport newly arriving Haitians on September 21. Before that, such immigrants were being allowed into the United States on what is called humanitarian parole.
Deportations were halted to Haiti for most immigrants after a devastating 2010 earthquake that killed more than 220,000 people and severely damaged the country’s infrastructure.
Haitians with temporary protected status are unaffected by the resumption of flights. (AP)
