WTO DG Okonjo-Iweala expresses sorrow with ‘unjustified, unnecessary war’ in Ukraine

Speaking at the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneva on 11 March, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that the WTO is an organization of the rule of law and violations of the rule of law stress the multilateral system immeasurably.

“It’s also very painful personally because I actually lived through a war for three years,” she noted.

“The images I see bring back very difficult memories.”

  1. Are you kidding me? The war is unjustified and unnecessary in the eyes of the West. But, Russia had genuine concerns that were ignored by Ukraine and its allies.

It’s most regrettable that the contending parties did not treat the issues with the seriousness that was required, so as to avoid a war that was really ‘unjustified and unnecessary’, as you say.
