Young Media Worker Dies

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Sep 05 2015 -The Antigua Broadcasting Services (ABS) has been thrust into mourning following the “untimely” death of one of its employees, 22-year-old Johnathan A Bowen.

Bowen, who worked at the government’s television and radio station passed away yesterday morning after being hospitalised for a week.

“He was one of the very young and talented young men who worked with us. He was unwell; we knew that he had an underlying illness, but that did not stop him from working and continuing his duties,” General Manager Erna-Mae Braithwaite said.

Braithwaite said the atmosphere at the ABS building on Cross Street was sombre yesterday, as programming was adjusted throughout the day to pay tribute to Bowen’s life.

“It’s difficult when you lose someone this young, especially when it is someone like Johnathan who had such a lovely personality. He gets along with everybody; he was always very willing to assist, and we are just coping,” Braithwaite said.

She said the technician worked last week Thursday night, but was rushed to hospital by a colleague after he fell ill, once again.

“There were times when he was unwell and he would just say ‘take me to hospital.’ The driver took him to the hospital the night before the storm (Erika) and up to Sunday he was communicating with me from the ward. He was moved to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and then we got the news (yesterday) morning that he passed,” the GM said.
