ANTIGUA – Opposition says early election signals a failed government

United Progressive Party (UPP) leader Harold Lovell says the upcoming general election is one year early because “things are not normal”.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced Saturday night that voters will go to the polls on March 21 to choose a new government.

However, in immediate response to the announcement, Lovell said that the Gaston Browne government has “failed to deliver on its manifesto promises”.

“The truth that all of us outside the Browne circle know is that life is harder than ever after nearly four years of this wicked government,” he said.

He said residents never enjoyed the benefits of low oil prices globally nor the revenues of the Citizenship by Investment Programme.

In addition, he said tourism did not enjoy the surge that neighbouring island like St. Lucia did.

“We fell on the happiness index, we crashed on the nutrition scale and sank on every other meaningful indicator of prosperity,” Lovell added.
