BARBADOS – Despite change in administration, Barbados remains committed to LIAT

Barbados on Tuesday pledged its continued commitment to the beleaguered regional airline LIAT in which it is the majority shareholder.

The new government of Prime Minister Mia Mottley outlined this commitment in the Speech from the Throne delivered by Governor General Dame Sandra Mason.

“As the major shareholder in LIAT, my Government will continue to work with the other shareholding countries in our ongoing efforts to confront the challenges faced by LIAT and to enhance LIAT’s operations and profitability so as to maintain reliable and affordable movement within our region for our people,” she said.

LIAT is owned by 11 Caribbean governments, with the majority shareholders being the Governments of Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Dominica.

The Governments of Barbados owns 51 percent of the shares; Antigua and Barbuda 34 percent; St. Vincent and the Grenadines with 12 percent; and Dominica three percent.

The Mottley-led Barbados Labour Party claimed all 30 seats at stake in general elections held here on May 24.
