JAMAICA – Calls for Director of Communications at PM’s office to resign

There’s a call for Director of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister Robert Morgan to resign that post following his announcement that he will be entering representational politics.

Morgan revealed a little over a week ago that he has applied to become the Jamaica Labour Party’s candidate for the constituency of Clarendon North Central when Pearnel Charles retires.

Oneil Grant, President of the Jamaica Civil Service Association, said given that announcement, Morgan must step down from his post at Jamaica House.

He noted that “the rules of the public sector dictate that, if one is going to go onto a political platform, then one has to resign their public office and pursue those alternatives that you are seeking.”

Grant explained that the rules apply even if a worker is engaged on contract.

Morgan’s announcement that he intends to seek to represent the JLP in Clarendon North Central elicited an angry response from the sitting MP.

Charles warned him not to disrupt the constituency and that he was wasting his time.

Pearnel Charles Junior has also shown interest in succeeding his father in the constituency.
