Customs officer killed after being snatched from home in daring daylight kidnapping in Antigua

Police in Antigua are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 44-year-old Customs Officer, Nigel Christian of McKinnons.

Christian was allegedly abducted from his home in McKinnons around 5:30 pm on Friday by four men. He was later found along a dirt road at Thibous in the vicinity of New Winthorpes Area, with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

A medical doctor arrived on the scene and pronounced him dead around 9:17 p.m.

Christian was one of several customs officers involved in the investigation of alleged fraud at the port.

In 2019, fraud totalling more than $3 million was uncovered at the Customs and Excise Division.

In October 2019, Customs Officer Cornell Benjamin was shot three days after the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda alleged that a scam masterminded by brokers and officers had caused a revenue shortfall to the tune of more than $3 million in unpaid taxes.

At the time, Benjamin was one of the chief officers attached to the Enforcement Unit within the Customs and Excise Division and was investigating the allegations of false invoicing and smuggling.

In January, the then Acting Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney sought to dispel the suggestion that there’s a correlation between Benjamin’s shooting and  the discovery of the fraud.

He insisted that the timing of both incidents was coincidental.
