Guyanese Voting for new Government

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, May 11 2015 – Guyanese are voting today to elect a new government. The 2,999 polling stations opened at 6.00 am (local time) and will close 12 hours later. Electoral officials say the results will most likely be known on Wednesday.

More than 570,000 people are eligible to cast ballots in the election that is being monitored by regional and international observer teams.

Among the early voters was David Granger, the leader of the opposition coalition alliance, comprising the group, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC).

Granger is challenging the incumbent Donald Ramotar of the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic), who is seeking to extend the party’s 22 year hold on power in this Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

Ramotar is due to cast his ballot at around 9.00 am (local time)
