JAMAICA – Suspected human trafficking ring being investigated

The police as well as the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency, PICA, are probing a suspected human trafficking ring in Portmore, St Catherine. This follows the arrests of two Haitians and a Ghanian on Tuesday.
The men were nabbed when the cops carried out a raid at a house in Waterford, St Catherine. They were charged yesterday with illegal entry and overstaying. They are 42-year-old Vilner Sonam and Salnave Julian, both of  Port-de-Paix, Haiti.
The men have been charged with entering Jamaica illegally by boat.
Sunset Taynie, 30, a school teacher of  Takoradi, Ghana, is charged with overstaying. It’s reported that Taynie arrived in Jamaica in October last year and was given a one month stay.
A week later he went to the Norman Manley International Airport after booking a flight to Canada. While airline officials were checking his travel documents, he ran from the airport and went into hiding. It was discovered that the documents were fake. Investigators suspect human traffickers were trying to get the men into the US via the Bahamas.
