Police Officers on Bribery Charge

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Oct 03 2015 – Three police officers including an Assistant Superintendent of Police, will return to court on October 12 on a charge of receiving a six million dollar bribe.

The police officers  – Assistant Superintendent, Terrence Brown and officers Ray Drepaul Saul, Trevon McKenzie and Shawn McPhoy – appeared in court Friday and were arraigned for allegedly receiving the bribe in order to prevent police from seizing GUY$18 million worth of cocaine and charging a man who was allegedly in possession of the illicit substance.

The incident is alleged to have taken place between September 11 and 12 this year at Salton Village, Corentyne Berbice.

The court heard that the men allegedly obtained from Renison Park the money as an inducement to prevent him from being charged with possession of narcotics.

Park was not charged for the drug offence because, according to police, the cocaine was released by the police patrol and handed over to a man at Skeldon who took it across the Corentyne River to Suriname.

When the four police officers appeared before Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan, only Brown, who pleaded not guilty, was granted GUY$250,000 bail.

The others, who also pleaded not guilty, were refused bail and remanded to prison. They will all reappear in court on October 12.
