Trinidadian man jailed for beating his wife, breaking protection order

A 46-year-old man self-employed man has been jailed for four years after he was found guilty of beating his 35-year-old wife last Monday.

Meetra Chaitram, who appeared before Magistrate Alicia Chankar in the San Fernando magistrate Court, south of here, was charged with assault by beating and contravening a protection order.

The court heard that Chaitram had also accused the mother of five children, of being unfaithful and dealt her blows to her head and body.

Chaitram breached the protection order which was issued by the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court in 2016 and was due to end in July this year.

The Trinidad Express newspaper reported that the accused told the court he had become frustrated after his wife, with whom he was working on a project at home, had left in order to get employment elsewhere.

But the woman said that she was not being paid a salary when she worked with her husband and that with the new job, she had a regular income.

“Since I start to work every day he cursing me,” she said, adding that on the day of the incident, he accused her of being unfaithful.

“He started to hit me. Our son (intervened) and he got lashed too. My hair was also pulled out. While I washing my hair this (Tuesday) morning it fall out.”

The magistrate said that Chaitram had “no respect for another human being” reminding him “this is the mother of your children.

He was sentenced to 24 months on each of the two offences.
