Woman killed during freak storm

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Aug 21 2017 – A seven-month-old pregnant woman was killed after a freak storm hit the village of Jawalla, a region of Esequiban Guyana, officials said Monday.

Regional Chairman of Region Seven, Gordon Bradford said that Marsha Jordan, died as a result of the storm over the weekend while one of her daughters were also injured.

Gordon said that the woman and her two children, ages three and 11, were sheltering under a house during the storm when it collapsed.

The officials said that four houses have been destroyed with another five partially damaged. The roof of the village guest house flew off and two village offices were also partially damaged.

The Regional Chairman said that the neighbouring villages of Phillipai, Paruima and Waramadong have not reported any damage.

However, due to heavy rainfall and the storm, Kamarang’s power supply has been knocked out.

Gordon and a Civil Defence Commission (CDC) team are to visit Jawalla later on Monday to assess the situation.
